400 series contain martensitic stainless steels and ferritic stainless steels.
Martensitic stainless steels
These stainless steels of the 400 series usually contain a min. of 11.5% up to 18% chromium and have higher
level of carbon than ferritics. They are capable of being heat treated to a wide range of useful hardness and
strength levels, and are used extensively in cutlery, knives, scissors, tools, and mechanical engineering parts.
Ferritic stainless steels
This group of stainless steels in the 400 series contains 10.5% to > 30.0% chromium for corrosion scaling at
elevated temperatures and resistance. They are nonhardenable by heat treating, and always magnetic.
Ferritic stainless steels are used in applications where resistance to corrosion and oxidation is important.
The lower chromiu stainless ferritics are primarily used for automotive exhaust.
Ferritic stainless steels with intermediate chromoium contents (15~17.0%) are used for automotive trim,
hot end automotive exhaust, appliances, and cooking utensils.
The high chromium ferritic stainless steels ( 18~30.0%) are used in automotive exhaust, trim, appliance applications
requiring high oxidation and corrosion resistance.
