Precipitation Hardening JIS SUS631 17-7PH Cold Rolled Stainless Steel Strip And Sheet
SUS630, SUS631 and SUS632 are cold rolled and then precipitation hardened.
This process forms an intermetallic compound containing minute amounts of aluminum in the martensite,
which enables these materials to achieve extremely high hardness.
Precipitation hardening refers to a process in which a material is artificially age-hardened (precipitation hardened)
after solution heat treatment.
Corrosion resistance: Austenitic steels > Precipitation hardening steels > Ferritic steels
What is SUS631 (17–7PH)?
Maintaining the superior properties of 18–8 stainless, SUS631 is the most common precipitation hardening stainless
steel that can be hardened through heat treatment. It can be subjected to a variety of heat treatment processes to
suit working and applications from the softest solution heat treatment to a hard full-hardened finish.
This allows it to acquire strength second only to quenched high-carbon martensitic stainless steels.
In a solution-heat-treated state, SUS631 is non-magnetic, but demonstrates quite strong magnetic properties
after precipitation hardening.

Precipitation hardening of SUS631 stainless steel
The TH and RH treatments involve two types of heat treatment processes to harden materials.
The T and R treatments are primary hardening heat treatments to cause a martensitic transformation in an
A material that is a metastable austenite phase (as with quenching of steel).
In the H treatment, precipitation hardening (the most prominent feature of this grade) is performed to harden
the metal completely. The CH treatment is a way to harden materials by cold working instead of martempering.
We supply our products finished to a suitable hardness by cold rolling them, Condition C material.
Consequently, it is only necessary to perform a single precipitation hardening treatment before use.
The number after TH, RH, and CH indicates the temperature of the precipitation hardening treatment in degrees Fahrenheit.
