446 is a heat resistant ferritic stainless steel with more than 23% chromium content.

Its corrosion resistance is therefore among the best of the ferritic stainless grades.

446 is highly resistant to thermal oxidation and scaling phenomena it is commonly used in applications

where the temperature range is between 800 and 1150°C.


Since the thermal expansion coefficient of 446 stainless is similar to special glasses, it is often used in metal-glass sealed joints.
446 is a ferritic stainless steel grade that is also resistant to liquid metals such as copper and brass.

It is therefore particularly well suited to electrical applications in which it comes into contact with stainless steel, copper and brass.
Long exposure to a temperature range of 350 to 800°C leads to a change in the metallurgical structure of the

material, which may become brittle (sigma phase or ferrite de-mixing).

Microstructure
stainless 446 has a 100% ferritic structure when annealed.

This metallurgical condition ensures that the material will not be subject to intergranular corrosion.

Holding for too long at temperatures in the 350-750°C range may result in brittleness of the material

due to the growth of brittle phases in the structure (ɑ+ ά ferrite de-mixing at around 475°C and Sigma phase at higher temperatures).

 

Thermal oxidation
446 stainless steel is resistant to thermal oxidation; it is commonly used for applications in the 800 to 1150°C temperature range.

In particular, it is resistant to the scaling off effect during cycling tests.
