Precipitation hardening 630 S17400 17-4PH 1.4542 Hot Rolled Stainless Steel Plate

 

Precipitation Hardening (PH) stainless steels are classified as martensitic or semi-austenitic.

They develop their high strength and hardness through a variety of heat treatments resulting in a very

high strength-to-weight ratio.

Semi-austenitic grades are 17-7PH and PH 15-7Mo.

They are austenitic in the annealed state, and martensitic in the hardened condition.

Martensitic grades include 17-4PH and 15-5PH.

The PH grades achieve high tensile properties in heat treated conditions.

Applications for PH steels include aerospace components, flat springs, and retaining rings.

 

Martensitic and precipitation-hardening steel - special grade EN 1.4542, DIN X5CrNiCuNb16-4, 17-4PH, 630, S17400

 

17-4 PH develops its high strength from the precipitation of copper particles in its martensitic matrix.

It comes in various conditions denoted by H plus ageing temperature in °F, for example H900, H1025 etc.

The higher the ageing temperature, the lower is the strength and the higher are the ductility and toughness.

The minimum 0.2% PS varies from 520 MPa to 1170 MPa depending on the condition.

The combination of high strength and good corrosion resistance finds uses in:

Drive shafts, bearings, gears, hydraulic rams, valve stems, load cells, bridge bearings, tensioning systems,

golf clubs, quick release pins, fasteners, aerospace, medical devices, food processing, conveying equipment, fall arrest systems

17-4 PH is the natural choice of high strength, corrosion resistant steel particularly where standard martensitic grades like 431 aren’t quite good enough.

 

17-4PH, 630 stainless grade combines the following characteristics:

  • Good corrosion resistance (just below that of 304)
  • High hardness and strength
  • Controlled balance of mechanical properties by ageing (precipitation hardening)
  • Improved toughness compared to 431 including use at sub-zero temperatures for the softer conditions
  • Magnetic
  • Thermal expansion comparable to carbon steel
  • Easier to weld than martensitic grades like 420 and 431 stainless

Product forms

17-4PH Stainless Steel sheet and strip in thicknesses from 0.1 to 10.0mm.

In these forms, the alloy is supplied in Condition A, ready for fabrication and subsequent hardening bythe user.

Since the material transforms to martensite on cooling to room temperature, flatness requirements should be

considered and discussed as part of the order.
